German

Did you know?

One in four Americans has German heritage.

About 120 million Europeans speak German as their first language.

After English German is the second most common language on the internet.

Every tenth book published in the world today is in German.

Germany has the fourth largest economy in the world and is the world's largest exporter.

More Americans have lived and worked in Germany than any other country in the world.

German is the language of famous philosophers like Kant and Nietzsche; great composers like Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach, as well as the world-known authors Goethe, Kafka, and Brecht.

Austin College offers students various options to explore German studies through courses in beginning, intermediate, and advanced German classes, as well as courses on German literature, culture, and film. All students who take German are encouraged and eligible to apply for a space in the German Language House in order to immerse themselves in German outside the regular classroom and on a daily basis. Each student in the language house receives regular address and personal attention in the target language by a native language house teaching assistant. Students are also invited to join the German Club of Austin College and enjoy a wide variety of activities outside of the classroom, such as German film nights, excursions, and cultural events. In today’s global market, foreign language competency and cross-cultural skills can enhance your study of International Affairs, Management and Business, but also of Philosophy, History, Music, or the Natural Sciences. If you want to be competitive, consider the benefit of choosing German as a foreign language, minor, or major.

Austin College offers exciting study abroad programs in Vienna, Berlin, Freiburg, and other cities. Students who study abroad will be equipped with a broader, international perspective, which will enable them to successfully connect and communicate in an increasingly interconnected world. In addition, you will earn credits towards your degree while living in and experiencing the rich history and culture of one of the German-speaking European countries.
