little red fish
red little fish
let me stab you to death with my three-pronged knife
tear you apart with my fingers
and put an end to your mute gyrations

little red fish
red little fish
my little knife is red
my little fingers are red
in my dish a little fish sinks down dead

The poem shown at left appeared along with many other verses and illustrations in Kokoschka's Die Träumenden Knaben.  Commissioned to create an illustrated children's book, the end product was a powerful expression of Kokoschka's spiritual state at the time.  The collection foretells the style and feel of the approaching Expressionist poetry

Kokoschka's dramas included Sphinx und Strohmann and Mörder Hoffnung der Frauen (Murderer Hope of Women).  Kokoschka depicts the latter in the advertisement poster for the Kunstschau, shown at right.  It deals with the struggle in relationships between the sexes, which was a stuggle that deeply affected Kokoschka's mental health.  These works are also considered the first pieces of Expressionist theatre.
